چکیده

The NTT access network encompasses NTT central offices and customer terminals and networks, and consists of transmission devices for individual customers in each NTT central office, transmission lines, and corresponding devices on the customers’ premises. Unlike trunk relay lines between NTT central offices, access networks are not designed to carry concentrated communication traffic. Since cost reduction strategies such as multiplexing and task splitting cannot be employed, it is important that the component parts are as inexpensive as possible. Providing an access network for ordinary customers that covers the length and breadth of the nation represents an enormous undertaking. For instance, the process of upgrading facilities to alleviate congestion in telephone services necessitated a substantial 20-year investment program that started in the 1950s, when NTT was known as the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. Given the scale of the task, it is especially important to develop simple, well-designed technologies and systems for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the access network. The transmission characteristics of the access network have a direct bearing on service provision. Equipment and system designs must strike an appropriate balance between the need to keep costs down at the initial stage and the need for the scalability and flexibility to accommodate the future diversification and modernization of the services. Thus, the access network is governed by a wide range of conditions and a different level of requirements. Much is expected from NTT’s optical technology research program, which began with the trunk network. In particular, it is hoped that the optical

Broadband optical access technologies to converge towards a broadband society in Europe [Invited]

This paper provides insights on the status of broadband optical access market and technologies in Europe and on the expected trends for the next generation optical access networks. The final target for most operators, cities or any other player is of course FTTH (Fibre To The Home) deployment although we can expect intermediate steps with copper or wireless technologies. Among the two candidate...

Application of Ethernet Technologies to FTTH Access Systems

The number of the high-speed Internet access users, those with broadband access, has reached 20 million. Of particular interest is the significant growth introduction number of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access users. Commercial FTTH in Japan started in 1997 and provides residential planeold-telephone-service (POTS) and CATV signals transmission by using a combination of synchronous-transfer-mode...

Fiber to the Home: Considerations Associated with a Successful Deployment

To realize the Nigerian Government’s goal to deliver 80% mobile broadband penetration by 2018, and become one of the top twenty economies in the world by the year 2020, Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology along with other broadband access technologies is an essential driving factor for providing broadband access. Currently most telecom operators are reluctant to deploy FTTH in the access networ...

FTTH Standards, Deployments and Research Issues

In this paper we investigate the current status of Fiberto-the-Home Passive Optical Networks. We start by reviewing the driving forces behind the push for broadband from the customer and service provider sides. PONs are currently preferred for new FTTH deployments for a variety of reasons; we review their standards, new technologies and deployment plans in the United States, Japan and Korea. We...
